Banasura Hills – Where Backwaters Meet the Sky
with Nimma Destination by YANADAYS
Trade in your screens for summit views, and swap the noise of the city for wind in the trees — the Banasura Hills Trek is a weekend getaway that takes you deep into the heart of Wayanad, where rolling Shola forests, backwater valleys, and quiet trails converge into something unforgettable.
We begin our journey on Friday night, cruising out of Bengaluru into the misty terrain of Kerala’s Western Ghats. By early morning, we arrive at our stay tucked away in Wayanad. A warm breakfast and the scent of coffee in the air set the tone — slow, steady, and full of promise.
After a short jeep ride, the trail of the overall 8km trek opens up to the stunning wilderness of Banasura Hills, home to dense Shola trees, grassy slopes, and uninterrupted vistas of the Banasura backwaters. The ascent is both peaceful and exhilarating — the kind that makes you pause, breathe deep, and just take it all in. At the summit, we settle in for a packed lunch, surrounded by panoramic views and the feeling that we’ve truly stepped out of routine.
But the trail doesn’t stop at the top — the descent leads us to the hidden gem of Meenmutty Waterfalls, a powerful cascade that rewards every step with its wild, untamed beauty. By evening, we return to our cozy campsite, where snacks, stories, and a glowing campfire round off the day — along with a delicious local dinner that tastes even better after a long trek.
On Sunday, the pace shifts from trail shoes to thrill mode. After breakfast, we visit the iconic Banasura Sagar Dam, a scenic spot where you can try your hand at ziplining, boating, and more (activities are self-sponsored). Whether you’re soaking in the views or flying above them, it’s the perfect way to cap off a weekend full of movement and meaning.
With the sun dipping behind the hills, we begin our return to Mysuru, Bengaluru — carrying with us not just sore legs, but a heart full of good energy and stories worth telling.
